Ingredients

For the Miso Sauce
  • 1/4 cup miso paste provides rich, umami flavor
  • 1/4 cup sake adds depth and complexity
  • 1/4 cup mirin balances the savory miso
  • 1/4 cup water to adjust sauce consistency
  • 2 tbsp sugar enhances sweetness of mirin
For the Mackerel
  • 2 fillets mackerel fresh and shiny
  • 1 green onion chopped for garnish

Equipment

  • Saucepan

Method

  1. Step 1: In a saucepan, combine the miso paste, sake, mirin, water, and sugar. Stir well to mix everything together.
  2. Step 2: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally until the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Step 3: Add the mackerel fillets to the saucepan, skin side down, ensuring they are submerged in the miso mixture.
  4. Step 4: Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the mackerel is cooked through and tender.
  5. Step 5: Carefully remove the mackerel fillets from the saucepan and place them on a serving plate.
  6. Step 6: Drizzle some of the miso sauce over the fillets and garnish with chopped green onion before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the mackerel in the miso sauce for up to a month.
