Ingredients

For the Simmered Fried Tofu and Greens
  • 1 block firm tofu drained and pressed
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cups mixed greens such as spinach, kale, or bok choy
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp vegetable broth or water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
Salt and pepper
  • Green onions chopped, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Skillet

Method

  1. Step 1: Start by cutting the tofu into bite-sized cubes. This will help it cook evenly.
  2. Step 2: In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the tofu cubes and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside.
  3. Step 3: In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn it!
  4. Step 4: Add the mixed greens to the skillet. Cook until they are wilted, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Step 5: Now, return the fried tofu to the skillet. Pour in the soy sauce, vegetable broth (or water), and sesame oil. Stir everything together and let it simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  6. Step 6: Season with salt and pepper to taste. You can always adjust the seasoning to suit your palate.
  7. Step 7: Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions. This adds a lovely crunch and freshness!
